Marcus C. Dawes

Marcus Dawes is a partner at Dawes Patent Law Group. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of California, Irvine in 2006. Very soon thereafter, Marcus obtained his license to practice as a patent agent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has worked on a variety of different cases ever since including biomedical devices, highly sensitive gyroscope-enabled measurement devices, and designs for household items.
While continuing to prosecute patent applications in front of the USPTO as a patent agent, Marcus obtained his J.D. from Northwestern California University School of Law and became a member of the California bar as a patent attorney. Marcus has since expanded his practice to include trademarks and other intellectual property matters.
In 2008, Marcus interned for an extended term with an international intellectual property law firm based in Europe and having offices in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany among others. As a result of this experience, Marcus has obtained unique insights into European patent practice and has since established a close working relationship with several European associates which has helped many clients expand their patent portfolios beyond the United States.

Daniel L. Dawes
Daniel Dawes is a partner at Dawes Patent Law Group. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and went on to earn a Masters of Science degree in Physics from the University of Oregon, Eugene, in condensed matter physics. After a stint at Bell Telephone Laboratories and the Commissioned Corp, of the United States Public Health Service, Dan received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1974.
One of Dan's first experiences as an attorney was as vice president and intellectual property general counsel for Lucasfilm Ltd. where he was extensively involved in merchandising the Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones series of films under George Lucas. Duties involved copyright enforcement in the films and licensed goods and establishing, prosecuting and managing an extensive trademark portfolio around the world as well as supporting the licensing efforts in merchandising the film properties.
Over the past four decades, Dan has worked on a wide variety of intellectual property matters involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, unfair competition, and licensing in both prosecution contexts as well as litigation. During that time Dan has worked for a wide variety of clients working with a wide range of technologies including helicopter design for Hughes Helicopters and later for McDonald-Douglas, and for Christensen Diamond Tool Company relating to diamond petroleum drill bits and oil well tooling. Dan has also worked extensively with multiple campuses of the University of California and has established special concentrations in MEMS, nanotechnologies, laser based biomedical imaging and treatments, and biomedical devices. For example, extensive patent work has been performed in domestic and foreign patenting of the Guglielmi Detachable Coils, a brain aneurysm catheter and implantation system, which has virtually replaced craniotomies as the standard treatment for brain aneurysms.
